Week of May 5-9
Reading- We are finishing Freedom Train this week. The students wrote letters to President Lincoln as an enrichment activity. The final test on the book will be Friday.
Religion- We are currently studying Lesson 8. Wednesday's homework is to create a Venn diagram comparing Joshua to another biblical character that we studied this year.
English 6th Grade- We are studying phrases, clauses, and complex sentences. Wednesday's homework is to combine sentences on page 488 to form complex sentences. Students should continue to study their notes for an upcoming test. We are also working on creating Chicago brochures in the computer room.
English 5th grade- We are studying prepositions. Students should have memorized the first fifteen prepositions on the list. They should start studying the rest of the list. There will be a graded worksheet on prepositions on Friday.
Spelling- Wednesday's homework is a worksheet on Lesson 21. Spelling test Friday.

Reading-We are starting Chapter 11 this week. Complete study guide questions and be prepared for pop quizzes on the previous day's reading.
Spelling- Test on Chapter 19 Monday. We will also be completing a challenging activity on the etymology of words.
6th Grade English- We will be researching information on Chicago landmarks and creating a brochure in the computer room. The purpose of this activity is to reinforce writing skills, especially the correct use of capitalization and punctuation.
Final test on Adverbs - Friday
5th Grade English- Quizzes on pronoun usage should be signed and returned on Wednesday. We will be practicing using pronouns and contractions correctly in writing . Unit test on pronouns will be next week.

Reading- We have begun to read Freedom Train. Questions for chapter 2 are due Tuesday. We will be reading some of the chapters in class and other chapters will be assigned for homework. Students should be ready for pop quizzes on the book at any time.
English 6th grade- We have started the unit on adverbs. Menu projects are due on Tuesday.
English 5th grade- Students are writing poems about opposite nouns. This week we will be making kites and displaying the poems on the kites.
Religion- We are studying the liturgical year and various holidays that occur throughout the year. The next test will cover pages 312-327.

Week of March 31st-April 4th
Happy Spring!
Religion- Students took a test on Wednesday on Chapter 6. We will be studying the scripture references to Jesus' appearances after the Resurrection.
Reading- We have finished reading the Sherlock Holmes mystery called "The Red-Headed League".
Wednesday's homework is to finish study guide questions 13-23. There will be a short quiz on the story and the vocabulary on Friday. Next, we will begin reading Freedom Train. I have copies of the book for each of the students.
Fifth Grade English- We have been reviewing for the unit test on Thursday. Study pages 180-214.
Sixth Grade English-Students have been learning how to use a thesaurus, and they have practiced improving sentences by using descriptive words.
On Wednesday they began working on a project that reinforces the use of descriptive language. Each student is to create a menu that includes 35 descriptive adjectives. Details and requirements for the project are in their notebooks. Projects will be due next week.
Spelling- Test on Lesson 17 on Friday. Business posters are due on Friday.
Art- Egyptians are due on Thursday.
Reminder: Some of the students have told me that they have depleted their supplies of loose leaf paper. Also, many of the students have broken pencil cases, so their pens, pencils, and markers are falling on the floor whenever they change classes. Please try to replace torn or broken pencil cases.

This week will be a hectic one as it is the last week of the third quarter as well as the last week before spring break.
In reading we have finished reading "The Miracle Worker" and "A Boy of Unusual Vision"; both of which deal with children coping with physical challenges.
Next, we will be discussing mystery stories as a literary genre and reading a Sherlock Holmes story.
Note: Third quarter Accelerated Reader has to be finished this week.
In English the students have finished writing a five paragraph paper. They also learned how to write a bibliography and use in text citations in their writing.
They are also finishing their study of adjectives.
In religion we have been comparing and contrasting the Eucharist as celebrated at the Last Supper with the Jewish feast of Passover.
The fifth graders have been finishing a unit on language mechanics. There will be a unit test after Easter break.
Look for copies of the Juliana Journal, which will be distributed soon.

Week of February 18-22
Thank you to the homeroom moms and to everyone who sent treats for Valentine's Day. Although we didn't have a party, everyone had more than enough treats to enjoy.
All fifth and sixth graders should check their supplies of erasable pens and replenish them as needed. We will be working on writing and editing skills in the coming weeks, and erasable pens are essential.
Reading- Final test on Hatchet will be Tuesday. Study the literary devices and review the study guides.
Fifth English- We will be finishing our interviews on Tuesday. Then we will begin our Unit Review. The unit test on adjectives will be on Thursday or Friday.
Sixth English- Students will be writing a character sketch about Brian in Hatchet. They will learn to use in text citations and a bibliography. These skills will lay the groundwork for their study of research papers in junior high.

The Week of February 4th-8th
Religion- We have been discussing freedom and relating the desire for freedom to the Civil Rights Movement and the plight of the Israelites in Egypt. Students should write a haiku about patriotism or freedom. Haikus are due on Tuesday.
Spelling- Test on Lesson 13 - Tuesday. Finish word art for Tuesday.
English 6th-Students should be prepared to read their fables aloud. Quiz on pronouns on Thursday. Monday's homework is Ex. 5 pg. 339 and Ex. 2 pg. 337.
English 5th- Homework for Tuesday is pg. 167 #58-68 and pg. 178 # 13-18.

Week of January 28th-February 1st
Open House on Sunday was a huge success! The students really enjoyed showcasing their work and having their families and friends visit their classrooms. The sixth graders also did a terrific job serving as tour guides.
Religion- We are reviewing Unit 1. Students are working on the Unit Review on pages 54-56. There will also be a unit test on Thursday.
Reading-The students have been learning about similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and other literary devices that are evident in Hatchet. We will be nearing the end of the book this week, and they should be completing the study guide daily.
6th English- We have finished the unit on agreement. Today the students started reviewing subject and object pronouns. After they finish reading Hatchet, we will be doing a writing assignment in conjunction with the novel.

Thank You
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the teachers' Christmas gift. Your kindness and generosity is truly appreciated. Have a happy, healthy new year!
January 7th begins the last week of the quarter. The sixth grade English classes will be taking a test on Unit 8. In spelling the class will be reviewing Lesson 10 and taking a test this week, also. Thursday, January 11th is the last day to take Accelerated Reader tests. Congratulations to all of the students who already have accumulated their required number of points.
Homeroom 26 has much to be proud of. We were named the Gold Star Homeroom for demonstrating exemplary behavior during the lunch periods in December. Way to Go, Homeroom! I knew that you could it!

Thank you to all of the students and their families who contributed to our Advent project. We collected almost thirty pairs of gloves as well as some mittens and scarves.
We have been continuing our study of the symbols and meaning of Advent. There will be a religion quiz on Advent on Wednesday.
The students have asked me if they could have a homeroom grab bag. I told them that any students in the room who wanted to take part in the grab could do so. The amount of the gift should be no more than $5.00 , and the gifts should be brought in on Thursday.
The last day to take Accelerated Reader tests will be January 10th. Students should be reading their books over Christmas vacation so that they can take tests when we return.
Fifth graders will be taking a quiz on irregular verbs this week. Study pages 118-121. I have taught them how to use flash cards as a study strategy. They are to make five flashcards for homework and bring them to class on Tuesday. Also, students are creating flyers using verbs in three tenses. These flyers are due on Tuesday.
