Grandparents Mass November 21, 2008
Grandparents Mass is Friday in the church at 1:00. Your children will sit with me during Mass. We will then walk back to the classroom together. All Grandparents are welcome back to the classroom and to the gym for a photo with their grandchildren. The children are dismissed once their Grandparent picks them up. If a Grandparent is unable to attend, please feel free to send someone else in his or her place. First graders love to show off their classroom.

Week of 11/17-11/21
WOW!! I cannot even believe that Thanksgiving is next week and that November is over. The month has just flown by. Busy week this week. We have our Art Moms coming in this week and the Grandparents Mass on Friday. Thank you to all who have been bringing in the gum drops I really appreciate it! Also if you want to add a deceased grandparent's name to our card please do so before Wednesday. You can send the name in with your child or you can email me. Here is what we plan on doing this week in Room 10:
Religion: We will finish up our chapter on thanking God for all that he has given us and move onto Chapter 9 which is about God's son Jesus. Please look out for the family letter that will be sent home about Chapter 9
Phonics: We will be starting short u this week. We will have a spelling test on Friday 11/21. I will send home the words on Monday.
Reading: We have come to the last story of our unit (A Vet) and we will have our second test on Thursday and Friday of this week. Please look for the vocabulary words for this story and work on them with your child. Just a note some items that will be covered on the reading test include short u, short o, short e and blends (fl, fr, sm, sl and sn), comprehension (including main idea ,characters and plot), -ed ending, context clues and figuring out a map. I urge you to work with your child on comprehension. When your child reads a book at home please ask them what happened in the story, who were the main characters, what was the setting , what was the plot and what was the main idea. This only strengthens the skills I am showing them in the classroom. We constantly look at these items when we read our story for the week or in our small group readings.
Math: We are starting Chapter 4 which looks at graphing (picuture graphs, tally graphs and bar graphs). The chapter letter will go home on Monday.
Handwriting: This week we will be practicing Y, W, X and K. Please have your child practice their handwriting at home as well. We do practice our handwriting in other ways at school such as when we write sentences.
Social Studies: We are talking about Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Students will be working on a writing project this week.
Science: We will continue to chart the weather and make our observations about what we see.
Looking forward to a great week! Just a reminder that the Grandparents Mass is on Friday at 1pm and that we would like to invite the grandparents to our classroom afterwards to see what we are doing.
Thanks,
Ms. Ebrom

Spice Drop Christmas Tree Project
Dear First Grade Parents,
The first week of December we will be making a special craft for Christmas. If possible, we would like each child to donate one tub of “Spice Drops” for this craft. They are usually sold at Wal-Mart, Walgreen’s and Happy Foods during the holidays. At the moment Wal-mart on Golf Rd. has them in the bag for a dollar. We would prefer you bring in the tub because there are more than in the bag. If you can only find the spice drops in a bag, we would like you to bring in two bags per child. The “Spice Drop” candy tubs are sold in multi-colors or red and green. Either one is fine.
You can start bringing them in as soon as you find them in the store. They do sell out early. Other schools must do a similar project.
Thanks!

The genre of this story is informational story. We will be talking about Proper Nouns and words with blends. Word cards will be going home on Monday please practice these words with your child. It is very beneficial for them to see the words at home and in our story at school.
