Homework: Math review sheet-study for test tomorrow.
Tomorrow we will be out-of-uniform(pop tops).
Don't forget to bring in an apple. Please make sure it is peeled and chopped. Thanks for your help!

We had an exciting day today-we used our new hardcover Superkids Readers for the first time!!! We read our first story- A Patch in a Pinch. Homework is to read the story with your child. Parent Homework--Please cover the book with cover provided(in the green folder). DO NOT write in the book-please put your child's name on the book cover. Please remember to send in the Superkids email form,so that I can log everyone into the parent's portal. I am still missing a few forms.
We read Ten Apples Up on Top and guessed how many apples we could balance(bean Bags). Ask your child how many they were able to balance.
We are also looking for another art mom for our room; if you are able to help out please call Mrs. McEnaney.

Homework: Read poem in the poem book and have a parent sign the page.
Our first spelling test will be on Friday October 7th. There is a letter in the folder explaining the Superkids spelling program. The word list for the test is attached to the letter. Please keep this list at home to study for the test.
We are going on a field trip to Safety Town at Harlem-Irving Plaza on Thursday October 6th. The permission slip is in the folder. Please cut off the bottom and return the completed form to school.
Don't forget to bring in your cut-up, peeled apple on Friday. Each child was asked to bring one apple to school to make applesauce. Please do not bring them in until Friday.

Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed! Today we started on our Johnny Appleseed Book. We will be reading books about apples and making applesauce on Friday.
Religion-Review week. Pages will come home on Friday.
Language Arts-We started our Level 3 books today. Ask your child about their super secret reader! A letter is in the folder asking for an email address that your child will use at home so they can read the guided readers online. We need to do the setup at school, so you can use the Superkids resources at home. Please return this information tomorrow.
Math-We are working on subtraction facts. The chapter 2 test will be on Friday. A study guide will come home for practice on Thursday.
Social Studies-We are learning about Johnny Appleseed.
We had fun in computers today doing a Pixie 3 program with Mrs. Granata. The paper came home in the folder today.
Please empty out the folders every night; this will help the children to keep their desks organized.

Religion-Family page in green folder. Our chapter is called We Give Praise to God. We will make praise cards and learn how to sign these words.
Language Arts-The children will continue to be tested on their Everyday Words this week. We will also finish our Assessment pages. The Welcome Back book came home in the folder today. You may keep this book at home to enjoy reading the stories together. Ask your child to show you their favorite Superkid.
Math-We will continue to work on subtraction. Today we practiced subtracting with Swedish Fish. Ask your child to tell you one of the stories we made up while we ate our fish! The chapter 1 math test is in the green folder-please sign and return tomorrow.
Science-We will finish up with fish tomorrow. Then we will begin a social studies unit on Johnny Appleseed.
Today we went to the computer lab. Mrs. Granata helped us to practice our typing skills. We are learning the correct finger placement for the keyboard.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS: Picture day is this Wednesday, Sept. 21. Please return the picture envelope tomorrow if possible, if not Wednesday morning.
Track-a-thon is this Thursday, Sept. 22. We run at Brooks Park from 12-12:45. Please turn in the green track-a-thon sheet by Wednesday. Please feel free to join us at the park. We will be out-of-uniform!

The children enjoyed their visit with Mrs. Granata in the computer lab yesterday. Here is some information regarding our computer curriculum:
The students in First Grade are beginning the school year in the computer lab by working on the Dance Mat Typing website. It is a free typing program by the BBC. They work independently by plugging in their headphones and listening to the directions. The ABCya First Grade website has games and activities that include: alphabetical order, upper-case and lower-case letters, counting numbers, connect the dots, numerical order, shapes, addition, e-storybooks and holiday games. The students will be working on IXL Math and online components for the Rowland Reading Program.

Religion-This week we are learning about the Bible. We will be reading some of our favorite stories. The family page is in the green folder.
Language Arts- Today we read the story At the Pond. It is in the brown envelope for homework tonight. Please return tomorrow. I am also sending home some short vowel puzzle games. Every child will get a turn for each vowel. Please read the short vowel word and find the matching picture. Please return the puzzle the next day so another child may get a turn. We will finish up our Welcome to Superkids Book this week. We will begin assessing some children on the Everyday Words List this Friday, and will continue into next week.
Math-We will have our first chapter test on Wednesday. A review/study guide will come home tomorrow. Next up-subtraction!
Science-We will continue our study of our underwater friends-fish!

Special thanks to Father Kris for showing us some of the holy things in our Church. Father explained the holiness of the tabernacle and the Easter candle to us.
Here is some important information regarding our playground: Every day (with the exception of weather or funerals) our students are able to have recess outdoors. Adult supervision consists of three parent supervisors as well as one of the K-1 teachers. The supervisors make sure that the students are not playing in the alley, between cars or near the dumpsters. We also watch for students who are in distress and also encourage group play.
Book orders were sent home this weekend. If you would like to order you may do so online or send in a check made out to Scholastic. Orders are due next Friday.

I ran short of time yesterday-one BIG reminder for the supply list- the treasure toys--PLEASE go to the dollar store buy the cheap lttle things that come in packages of 5 to 10. Please do not spend a lot of money of these!

Religion-The family page is in the green folder. We are learning about our church-St. Juliana. After Mass tomorrow we will look at the special things inside our church-the tabernacle, altar table, crucifix and baptismal font.
Language Arts-We are almost finished learning about our friends-the Superkids. Today we drew our favorite character. We are reviewing our Everyday Words we learned in Kindergarten.
Math-We are practicing different ways to make our number sentences with unifix cubes. The math sheet in the folder today with the orange border needs to be signed and returned tomorrow. (It is stamped Sign and Return.)
Science-We will continue to learn about fish.
Homework: Read the story in the brown envelope and return tomorrow. Sign and return math sheet.
