08 April 2013

Week of April 8

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and a great spring break. It is hard to believe that we have started the 4th quarter. We are starting some very exciting times for both the 7th and 8th graders.

The graduation packet was sent home with the 8th graders today. Please read over the materials and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. All the permission slips must be returned to homeroom teachers on or before the assigned date. Thank you for your help with all of this information.

7th Religion: Please return the yellow form and fee for Confirmation when you can. It is actually due on April 17th. Confirmation banners are optional but I am encouraging the students to do a banner or use their family banner. I just don't want any of them to be disappointed on Confirmation night when they see so many banners and then are upset that they did not do one. I would say that about 90% of the kids bring in a Confirmation banner.

8th Religion: We are just starting a chapter on the Crusades.

8th Reading: Read chapter 5 in Outsiders for Wednesday.

Have a great week.

28 March 2013

Directions and information about graduation, graduation activities, and the graduation bill is all included in this packet. There are things in this packet that do have to be returned (permission slips, etc.). Please make sure that your son or daughter gives this packet to you on the 8th of April. Thanks so much.

Have a wonderful Easter.

25 March 2013

Week of March 25

Please remember to look for any donations of adult clothing or shoes for Timothy's Ministry. Donations will be accepted until Thursday of this week.

7th Religion: We are doing very well with our Confirmation book and will finish that part of the program shortly after Easter. Forms and fees are due shortly after Easter. On the yellow form, please put the exact date of Baptism. Thank you for your help with this.

8th Religion: We just completed a chapter in our text. This week we will be studying about Holy Week. There will be a quiz on this tomorrow.

8th Reading: Read up to and including Chapter 4 for Wednesday. Quiz on the vocabulary for the first three chapters tomorrow and a quiz on the first two chapters of the novel.

Have a wonderful Easter and a restful spring break. Time will fly when we return from break and Confirmation and Graduation will be here very quickly. 8th graders, enjoy these last few weeks with your classmates.

18 March 2013

March 18

Thank you for returning your graduation proofs and yellow cap and gown order forms. There will be a packet mailed next week with all of the graduation information. We apologize if the yellow form for not ordering a cap and gown was unclear about money. Quite a few people who wanted to order just the tasse; sent the $5.00. We sent it back with the children and told them that the cost would be on their graduation bill. We had put it on our blogs and told the students that they did not need to bring any money at this time but we didn't put it on the form. So we are sorry for any confusion.

7th Religion: Many pages with Confirmation information were sent home last Wednesday. There is one form that has to be returned with the fee. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to email me. The kids are doing a great job with the program.

8th Religion: We have concluded our unit on the Holocaust and will return to our religion texts now. We will complete a chapter this week on the Church in the Middle Ages and next week we will do a study of Holy Week.

8th Reading: We are beginning our new novel tonight ("The Outsiders"). The studentst will be reading a chapter every night or every other night.

Have a great week.

8th Grade Reminders

Graduation pictures are due on Monday. If they are not returned by Monday, the company charges a $25.00 fee.

If you do NOT need to order a cap and/or gown, the yellow form must be returned by Monday. Otherwise, we will assume that you need a cap and gown and will order for you.

A group of 7th graders are doing their service project for "Timothy's Ministry", a soup kitchen that a group of 5 7th grade families go to twice a month. This facility serves the homeless and they do provide used adult clothing, shoes, trial size toiletries, sleeping bags, etc. to the people who come there for a meal. This group of 7th graders has asked for help with donations from their 7th and 8th grade classmates. If you have anything that you can donate, please have your child bring the donations to school before spring break.

Thank you for your support.
Have a good long weekend.

March 12

8th Graders: A yellow form was sent home yesterday concerning caps and gowns for graduation. If you do NOT want to order either one or both of these items, please return the form indicating that choice. If you do not return the yellow form, we will assume that you need to order a cap, gown, and tassel. Please do not send any money at this time. We just need to know how many caps and gowns to order. All students must order a tassel.

There was a letter sent home today with all 7th and 8th graders about a service project that a group of 7th graders are doing for Confirmation. It is asking for help with donations of adult clothing and other items that are needed at a shelter that they are volunteering for. Any help with these items will be greatly appreciated. All of the information is included in the letter that was distributed today.

7th Religion: more Confirmation information will be sent home tomorrow or Thursday. There is a form that must be returned.

8th Religion: we are concluding our study of the Holocaust.

8th Reading: final test on the memoir was taken today and we will start our next novel next week.

Have a great week.

8th Grade Field Trip

We have just returned to school with the 8th graders from the Holocaust Museum. Our students were so wonderful to be with. They were polite, respectful, and attentive. They were a pleasure to be with. They make me so proud to be their teacher. Thank you for sharing your children with us. A big thank you to the four chaperones who attended the museum with us. Thank you so much for going with us on this trip.

25 February 2013

February 25

7th Grade: We will be ordering Confirmation gowns this week. I am sending home a form for you to sign that lets me know if you want to order a gown or not. If you already have one, that's great. I just need to know because occasionally a student tells me they have one at home and then they can't find it. If you could just check that out and let me know on the form by Wednesday, that would be great. We will be starting the next chapter in our Confirmation book this week. Service projects are in full swing and the kids are doing a great job.

8th Religion: we are continuing our study of the Holocaust.

8th Reading: we have started our new book. It is a memoir written by a Holocaust survivor about her experiences during the Holocaust when she was 14 years old. It is an excellent book. Expect your child to be reading about 40 pages every other night. I gave a quiz on Thursday on the material that was to have been read for that day. Unfortunately it was obvious that some of the students are not doing the reading.

Have a great week.

I am taking the 8th graders to the Holocaust Museum in Skokie on March 6th. I told the students yesterday that I needed 4 chaperones for the trip and to ask their parents if any of them wanted to go. I have had two e-mails from parents who would like to go. I still need two more chaperones. If you are interested, please e-mail me. Thank you so much.

8th Religion: we are doing a short chapter on Lent. We will begin our study of the Holocaust on Wednesday.

7th Religion: we will be finishing up chapter 2 of our Confirmation book this week. Service projects have begun.

Have a great four day weekend.

05 February 2013

February 5

The 8th grade retreat on Thursday was wonderful. I received nothing but compliments from the group conducting the retreat. I did pass on these compliments to the students yesterday. A huge thank you to the families who helped out with accomodations and meals for the retreat group. Two families hosted these 13 young adults for two nights overnight. Two families provided a wonderful dinner for the group on Wednesday night. One family provided breakfast on Thursday morning. The two host families, in addition to overnight accomodations, provided dinner on Thursday night and breakfast on Friday morning. What would we do without wonderful families like this???? Thank you again.

8th Reading: we are finishing our novel this week and will take the test on Friday. We will view the movie next week.

8th Religion: test on chapter 9 on Thursday.

7th Religion: service projects begin next week for those who are not already involved in a project. I am sending home a small book for the students to use with their sponsor.

Have a great week.

22 January 2013

Week of January 22

7th Religion: We began our Confirmation preparation today. The students received their Confirmation books. I told the students today who are not involved in a service project yet to start thinking about what they would like to do. There are many activities from which to choose. I will be discussing this further with them in the next few days. There will be a letter sent home very soon with Confirmation information.

8th Religion: we are finishing up our self-esteem activities.

8th Reading: we are reading chapter 9 tonight and chapter 10 tomorrow night. There will be a vocabulary quiz on chapters 9 and 10 either Thursday or Friday (probably Friday because of the science fair tomorrow night.)

Thank you for sending in the release forms from the high schools. We mailed all the students' information to the high schools on Friday.

Reminder for 8th graders: please bring in your retreat slip and money by Friday.

Hope to see you at the science fair tomorrow night or Open House on Sunday--or both!!!

Have a great week.

13 January 2013

Week of January 14

I have a favor to ask of the 8th grade parents. We have a retreat scheduled for the 8th graders on Thursday, January 31. There is a team coming from Minnesota to run the retreat. We are responsible for providing housing and meals for this group. There are two families who have generously offered to provide housing for these 13 young adults on both Wednesday night (the 30th) and Thursday night (the 31st). I am now asking if any of you would offer to provide dinner for the group on Wednesday evening or breakfast on Thursday morning? The dinner could take place at the parish center so maybe there are a few of you who would be willing to prepare dinner for that evening? Breakfast could be brought early to school on Thursday morning (maybe bagels or doughnuts?). We will provide lunch. Right now I am leaving the Thursday night dinner open because I know many of you will be leaving town after school on Thursday. If any of you can help with any of these things, that would be wonderful. If you are interested, please let me know. Thank you.

If your son or daughter took a test at a Catholic school on Saturday, please send the release form from the high school on Monday.

No students may come out of uniform on this Friday. Students should bring their Peace t-shirts and any jerseys, uniforms, etc from any sports or activities that they are involved in.

7th Relgion: working on chapter 9 this week. We will be starting Confirmation preparation next week.

8th Relgion: working on an essay this week about what their Catholic Education means to them. This will be due on Thursday. We will also be working on a self-esteem activity.

8th Reading: continuing with novel.

Have a good week.
