Tomorrow is the field trip to the Brookfield Zoo. Please make sure that your child has a paper bag lunch with their name and a drink. It is an out-of-uniform day, so make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, we are going rain or shine! It is a regular school day, please come to school by 8:15am and pick up at 2:50pm.
We will be meeting Alf next week! Please make sure your child can write, recognize, and pronounce the short sound for the letter "a" (as in cat, hat, etc). We are also going to learn how sound out words with "a" and "o" in the middle. Alf will be teaching us about camping and neighborhoods. We will be learning about rhyming and descriptive language.
Please make sure you are practicing at home how to draw squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, ovals, and diamonds. We use these things daily for patterning, and it is important that everyone knows how to make these shapes.
It is starting to get colder outside. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to go outside for recess. Please also make sure that your child has SJS wear if they need it in the classroom. LABEL EVERYTHING with their first and last names. Thank you!
Mother's Club Hot Lunch is next Friday, October 7th.
Our SUPERKIDS dog, Golly will be teaching us about identifying parts of a book, the initial and final sounds in words with g, rhyming words, zoo animals, important ideas, plot of a story, and writing his favorite letter G!
In math we are working on patterning. Please be sure to ask your child to give you an example of some patterns. For example: ABAB, AABB, ABBA, etc.
Your child should be able to count to 20 on their own. Please be sure to practice this with them at home.
We will be talking about how God gave us animals and plants to take care of on earth. Please emphasize this at home as well. We will also continue to learn the "Hail Mary". Practice this at home with your child please, and remind them that prayer is a serious time.
***Field Trip to the Brookfield Zoo is this Friday, September 30th. It is a regular school day. All students may come out of uniform, please dress appropriately for the weather. Everyone must bring a brown bag lunch with a drink. Please do not send any money, we will not have any time to use it.
We will continue working with our SUPERKIDS friend Oswald on his favorite letter "O". Please make sure to review "O" and "C", your child should know how to recognize, write, and vocalize both letters.
In math we will be working on graphing, patterning, and sorting. Please continue to reinforce all the skills as the worksheets come home.
In religion, in addition to continuing on with our chapters, we are going to begin learning the "Hail Mary". Please practice this prayer at home as a family.
We are working on writing our names correctly: first letter capital, the rest lower case. Please practice this as well at home.
When your child is doing homework, please make sure that your child uses pencil to complete any writing portion.
**Picture Day is on Wednesday, September 21st. Please make sure to turn in your form by Tuesday, September 20th. Your child may come out of uniform, and please make sure your child has gym shoes on for gym class in the morning.
**Track-a-thon is on Thursday, September 22nd. Please make sure to turn in your green sheet by Wednesday, September 21st. Your child may come out of uniform, please wear sports clothes and gym shoes.
***Our half-day friends will be dismissed as usual at 11:00am. They are more than welcome to meet us at Brooks Park at 12:50pm to walk the track with their friends. The half day friends will then again be dismissed at 1:30pm at the park.
Ladies, please remember to wear shorts under your skirts EVERYDAY.
If you would like to order and pay for books online from Scholastic it is possible to do so. Just go to the website, click the parents link, and follow the steps to register for an account. Our classroom access code is: HJJQZ Please be sure to send me a quick email or note in your child's folder if you do order online because I do not get any notification that you have done so, but I do have to submit for the classroom so the orders can be placed. The students in Kindergarten begin the school year in the Computer Lab by visiting the STARFALL website. They review their alphabet in ABC’s – Let get ready to read. The ABCya Kindergarten website has games and activities that include: alphabetical order, upper-case and lower-case letters, counting numbers, connect the dots, numerical order, shapes, addition, e-storybooks and holiday games. The Rowland Reading Program has a technology component that the children will be working with this year in the lab.
This week we will be meeting our second SUPERKIDS friend, Oswald. He is going to teach us all about the letter "O". Please make sure your child knows the short "o" sound (as in "hot"), can recognize and write both the capital and lowercase forms. Some of the skills we will be talking about are different parts of the book, making predictions, reality and fantasy, and animals that start with the letter "O".
In math we are learning about shapes and sorting. Please review with your child rectangle, circle, and square.
We will also be starting our farm unit.
Gym is on Wednesdays. Your child may wear any color gym shoes all day, but please make sure that the shoes do not have lights.
Please make sure to send back your child's library book on their library day each week. Rooms 2 and 5 have library on Fridays, room 9 has library on Thursdays.
VIRTUS: If you plan to volunteer in the school for anything this year, you need to be Virtus certified. If you have not gone through the Virtus training please make sure to sign up for the class this month on Thursday, September 22nd at 7pm in the school hall. Please be sure to send in your pop-tops! When we collect a gallon size bag, our room gets an out-of-uniform pass.
Every day (with the exception of weather or funerals) our students are able to have recess outdoors. Adult supervision consists of three parent supervisors as well as one of the K-1 teachers. The supervisors make sure that the students are not playing in the alley, between cars or near the dumpsters. We also watch for students who are in distress and also encourage group play.
NO SCHOOL: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th
After working very hard this week on "C" your child should be able to recognize, write, and say the sound for this letter. Please make sure you review these things at home. Late next week, we will begin working on "O".
In math, we will continue to work with position words this week.
We will be working on forming the "Sign of the Cross" correctly, please be sure to practice this at home as well.
Back-to-School Night is this Wednesday, September 7th. It will begin in the gym at 7pm. You will then move on to your children's classrooms for more information on what they will be learning this year.
Please make sure your child knows if they have nuts or peanut butter in their lunch each day. Also, please DO NOT send any nuts peanut butter in your child's snack. There are many children in Kindergarten with a peanut allergy, and we want to have a safe environment for all of our friends.
***When choosing a birthday treat for your child to pass out, please also make sure there is no nut or peanut butter content. This is typically clearly marked on the packaging.
Just a reminder, please make sure to say your goodbyes at the school entrance and allow your child to walk by themselves to their classroom.
Please check all your papers at home and make sure to return all necessary forms as soon as possible.
