*Sharing our original Fairy Tale Stories - using our best speaking voices, and trying to entertain our audience with good emotion :)

*Reading about a special group of Catholic Schools that began here in the Chicago area in 1996, called Cristo Rey, which helps send children in need to Catholic School. The we created our own TV to advertise what makes SJS such a terrific Catholic school. What is on your child's TV...?

Today's Highlights...

*Writing special letters of thanks to our parents to express our APPRECIATION of attending St. Juliana Catholic School

*Taking the Unit 19 spelling pre-test

*Reading about Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart, who had great faith and opened over 30 Catholic schools, hospitals, and homes in the Washington Territories in the early 1800's. Then we worked in groups to create a chart explaining how our Catholic Education is preparing us to be good citizens as well as good Catholics. What is on your child's list...?

HOMEWORK:

*Working very hard in the computer lab to type the Final Draft of our Fairy Tale Stories

*Playing "Religion Jeopardy" in preparation for tomorrow's test

*Celebrating Chinese New Year by reading a book about this holiday's traditions & enjoying some authentic Chinese treats and a red envelope filled with surprises, thanks to Mrs. Boldt's sister who just returned from China. Thanks a bunch, Tia :)

Today's Highlights...

*Attending morning Mass - Fr. Steve challenged us to take time in prayer to recognize and appreciate the GOOD in each person. Also, we as a class discussed the importance of receiving the Communion Host with REVERENCE, as we did at our First Holy Communion. This would be a great family conversation to have as well...

*Rereading our own Fairy Tale Story, and evaluating its strengths/weaknesses using a rubric. This will serve as a tool for us to revise our stories with an adult tonight...

HOMEWORK:

ENGLISH - (4th & 5th) Revise story with an adult, be sure to use the 2 rubrics given in class today

*Attending morning Mass- Fr. Steve reminded us to set aside special time in our very busy days to PRAY :)

*Reading a sample of a Fairy Tale Story written by a 5th Grade student. Next, using our Fairy Tales chart, we discussed important features that Fairy Tales should include and compared them to the features in the student Fairy Tale.

*Beginning our Commandment Project with a partner - which Commandment did your child choose...?

HOMEWORK:

READING - p.60a & 61

ENGLISH - Brainstorm ideas for Fairy Tale (special beginning/ending words, magic, things happening in 3 or 7, problem, attempts to solve the problem, how problem is solved, lesson learned)

Today's Highlights...

*Beginning the writing process for our Fairy Tale story. We began by BRAINSTORMING and charting possible characters, settings, and problems. Then we had conferences with a partner to receive another's opinion on our ideas. The next step is planning the traits of our 2 main characters (the "good" and the "villain")using a character map

*Learning more about the 10 Commandments and how we can follow them in our everyday lives

ENGLISH - Character Map (4th & 5th)

Today's Highlights...

*Taking Yearbook Photos

*Learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and viewing some interesting photos of his life. We discussed the part of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech about people being judged by the "Content of their Character", and wrote about what makes up our own character

*Taking our spelling pre-test

*Discussing making promises and why it's important to keep the promises we make, just as God always keeps His. The we wrote promises to people we care about
