Christian's Riddle: "Why are fish smarter than cats?"



Today's First Communion Reflection: Ask everyone at home the first thing thery said/thought when they saw you for the first time.



Today's Highlights...

*Creating a special "pot o' gold" containing our blessings from God - what are some of your child's treasures...?

*Practicing rewriting horizontal math challenges as vertical to make regrouping easier

*Writing predictions for our new story, "Going Batty for Bats", then listening to the story

*Beginning the first draft of our animal compare/contrast essays. We are focusing on the writing trait of "sentence fluency", and we sang a special song to help us focus on the trait!

*Working in the computer lab on a "Special Types of Weather" slideshow. We got a good start, to be continued tomorrow...

*Enjoying a special "Art Mom" presentation inspired by the Austrian artist, Gustave Klimt. it was a concentration on patterns. SPECIAL NOTE: Our Art Moms, Mrs. Mc Enaney & Mrs. Mulvaney prepared the lesson to be done in the form of a BOOKMARK. We gave the children the option to create a "holy" bookmark that can be used as the special family project for Chapter 2. If you still want to create one as a family, that is fine also. Please note that a family member must still sign the activity page in the Eucharist book, whether the bookmark was created in class or not!

*Thanks to all who have contributed to our class Easter Basket Donation for a 7-8 year old boy. we look forward to the incoming donations as well! P.S. Does anyone have a LARGE basket to donate that we could put all of our "goodies" in...?

Monday News

Zack's Riddle: "What state has the smallest soft drink?"

Today's Highlights...

*Thanks to our friend Zack, we have a "Countdown to First Holy Communion" calendar that we will open a window on each day. The person who opens it for the day will read a special prayer, then tell what the special activity is behind the window to help us prepare for our "Big Day" Today's activity is to talk with our family about the day we were born & why we have the name we do. Perhaps it would make for nice dinnertime conversation...

*Taking an addition timed drill, a great way to see if you're progressing with your facts, as well as if you need to practice more! (3 went home today) - We also used our whiteboards to practice adding with regrouping

*Taking our spelling pre-test & placing the word cards in ABC order

*Reading & presenting the poem, "Good News About Bats" in groups

*Learning about different types of "special weather" - we took notes in our notebooks, then played "Pass the Box" to review

*Beginning the writing process for our Compare/Contrast Essays. Today we did the "Brainstorming" & Prewriting" steps using a venn diagram to compare & contrast 2 animals. Which 2 did your child choose...?

HOMEWORK:

*Begin writing spelling sentences, try the "Teach Me" activity at www.spellingcity.com

*Math p.224, try activity G.9 at www.ixl.com

*Answer the questions in Science Book, p. C11 in complete sentences on lined paper. Be sure to borrow words from the question to begin your answer!

Zack's Riddle: "What kind of dish do ducks like?"

Today's Highlights...

*A note was sent home to all students outlining the AR goal for the 3rd Quarter, and how many points have been earned thus far. Please review these with your child & stress the importance of meeting the goal by April 2. Thank You!

*Playing "SPARKLE" to review our spelling words - congrats to our winners Catherine & Andrew!

*Solving story challenges in math by guessing & checking. Thanks to all of our student "teachers" who solved them at the board & explained the "how to" process so well!

*Using a venn diagram to compare and contrast things we like with those of our partner

*Practicing in Church for tomorrow's "Stations of the Cross" - hopefully our families can join us at 2:15 pm tomorrow

*Practicing the strokes we will use when writing the uppercase cursive letters

*Sharing some "Bulletin Board" family projects that came in today

*Reading the responses we say at the beginning of Mass & practicing how to receive the Host by using oyster crackers - we did pretty well!

Bret's Riddle: "Why did the song do so well in school?"

Today's Highlights...

*Attending morning Mass - Fr. Phil reminded us that we are to speak kindly to others, as our words can hurt when they are unkind!

*Using the notebook computers from the mobile lab to reasearch "bat facts" and images. We used our findings to create a wonderful project that we a re all "batty" about! We'll start sharing them tomorrow...

*Learning how to use a number line to round numbers to the nearest ten to estimate their sums

*Reading the Bible story of "The Loaves and the Fishes." Since it was a Gospel reading, some of us took turns giving a "homily" about what lesson we can learn from the story. Ask your child for a "homily" of the story...

HOMEWORK:

*Finish coloring the "Water Cycle" poster, please return it to school in the tube asd to keep it from getting bent!

*Continue to write spelling sentences, try a game at www.spellingcity.com

*Practice math facts, try activity G.7 at www.ixl.com - be sure to sign in so that you get credit for your work!

*Eucharist Family Project is due a week from today

*Return library books for tomorrow

*Invitation to attend Stations of the Cross - the second Grade is preparing the Stations of the Cross this Friday, 2:15 p.m. in Church. Please come to pray and support our classroom readers - Andrew, Sean, Anthony, Elie, and Megan!
*A Request for Donations... our classroom stash of treasure box prizes as well as "Dum-Dum" suckers has dwindled to the last few. Any donations would be appreciated!

Today's Highlights...

*Working with a partner to solve regrouping addition challenges

*Acting out our new vocabulary words for others to guess, writing predictions for our story, "Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats", and then listening to the story

*Taking our Chapter 10 Religion Test

Learning about the water cycle, then creating a model of it on a poster - we'll color it next time...

*Reading about our beloved American Author, Dr. Seuss, in remembrance of his birthday

HOMEWORK:

*Vocabulary sheet & read the story, "Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats"

EUCHARIST BOOK FAMILY PROJECT NOTE: The first family project is a "Bulletin Board" - poster board may be used, or if you are ambitious, you can use an actual cork-board. Katie S.'s Riddle: "What do you call a piggie that does karate?"

Today's Highlights...

*Taking a 100 addition fact timed drill & playing a fun regrouping game with partners using a special "double dice" - be sure to ask about it!

*Taking our spelling pre-test & placing our word cards in ABC order

*Reading the poem, "Questions About Bats" & listing words containing the digraphs "ph" & "tch"

*Playing "Religion Jeopardy" to review for tomorrow's Chapter 10 Test, we also began our Eucharist Books, please look in the "Homework" section for details on the upcoming family project

*Beginning our "Weather" hapter in science. we took special "T" notes in our notebooks (ask for an explanation) & played "pass the box" to review the concepts learned

*Enjoying "Scientist Jack's" experiment on the importance of water for plant growth - We look forward to observing both sets of seeds over the next week to find which will sprout!

*Raeding the March poem, "I'm Up Here" - floating about as the kite who's point of view the poem was told by!

*SPECIAL FAMILY PROJECT for the EUCHARIST BOOK...

Today we began our Eucharist book, and the children brought them home (in a plastic bag) for you to review the "At Home" activity on page 13, due next Wednesday, 3/10. Each chapter will have a new "At Home" activity, that will be due the following Wednesday (although children may bring them in earlier if complete). these projects are to be done TOGETHER AS A FAMILY, and the page is to be signed by a parent upon completion. Perhaps you would like to make a special tradition/celebration of doing these projects (enjoy a treat afterwards, pipck a special day to do them, etc.) The books must return to school each day in the plastic bag, as we will be studying from them/doing the projects until our first Holy Communion Day!

John's Riddle: "Why did the golfer wear 2 pairs of pants?"

Today's Highlights...

*Reading more about Ruby Bridges, then we wrote a class letter to her explaining what we learned from her story, and what we admire about her. With any luck, she'll write us back!

*Using our whiteboards to add 2 double digit numbers with regrouping

*Reading the book, "Henry's Freedom Box" (AR) - a true story of an African American slave who found an interesting way to become free. Ask about what he did, and how WE tried out his idea!

*Enjoying a docent visit from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Thanks to Mrs. Mitchell & Mrs. Weindruch for teaching us about the program we will see tomorrow. The music was great & it was fun trying out the instruments!

*Thnking about healthy teeth habits, starting by reading the story, "Tooth Trouble" (AR) - tomorrow we'll be making a healthy/unhealthy tooth collage and writing a tooth story!

Christian's Riddle: "Why were there so many red lights on the highhway?"

Today's Highlights...

*Attending morning Mass, then staying after to talk with Fr. Steve about "The Liturgy of the Word" which is what we are studying this week in Religion class. We sure were an inquisitive bunch, and Fr. Steve was kind enough to take time to answer all of our MANY questions. How lucky we are to have such a wonderful pastor at St. Juliana - Thanks Fr. Steve!

*Sharing the rest of our "African American Inventor" research projects

*Completing a lowercase cursive review

*Taking our first 100 fact timed drill & practiceing addition with regrouping on our whiteboards

*Reading the book, "The Story of Ruby Brdges" (AR) - ask your child for reasons why this real African American girl from the 60's was so curageous, and how she prayed for those who were unkind to her, as Jesus did...

John S.'s Riddle: "What is the smartest bee?"

Today's Highlights...

*A BABY IS BORN! God bless our friend, and new BIG sister to baby Elyse, GRACE! We have prayed often for Mom & baby, and we are so very happy for the entire family! It sure was fun making cards for God's newest little miracle!

*Using the mobile computer lab to research a famous African American inventor. we wrote a report, then began sharing them with the class. What can your child teach you about her/his inventor...?

*Celebrating our friend Nate's summer birthday

*Practicing adding with regrouping

*Learning more about the "Liturgy of the Word" portion of Mass - we even recited the Nicene Creed - it sure is a long prayer!

*Enjoying the rest of the film "Selma, Lord, Selma". It is a story of a young African American girl from Selma, Alabama taking place during the Civil rights Movement. What did your child find most important about her story...?

HOMEWORK:

*Due to the shortened week, and our field tri[p opn Friday, we will not be starting a new story or spelling list this week

*Handwriting pp.94/95 - to be written on our best MANUSCRIPT writing, not cursive!

*Study Chapter 10 religion (highlighted sections), our test will be next Tuesday

*Complete the "Butterfly Math" sheet
*Get test folder signed
*A reminder, all must pack a lunch for Friday (field trip) as well as a snack to be eaten when we return
