Saint Juliana School Board

Meeting Minutes

September 6, 2011





In attendance: Kathleen Barton, Fr. Steve Kanonik, Mark Baranek, Nancy Battaglia, Christopher Bielfeldt, John Gallagher, Denise Javers, Jamie Kumiega , Mike MacGregor, Sue McInerney, Tim Neenan, John Ryder,Todd Steffen and Mary Sugrue.

Meeting called to order at 7:05

1. Greetings and Introductions.

2. Opening Prayer.

3. June Meeting Minutes Approved.

4. Distribution and discussion of School Board Binders for new members

5. Principal’s Report

Academics

*Rowland Reading Foundation: Superkids Reading Program has been purchased for the Kindergarten to 2nd grade students. It is a fully integrated Language Arts curriculum. A grant from the Office of Catholic Schools and Mothers Club funded this new program for the school. All teachers have attended professional development over the summer and will continue to work with a reading coach throughout the year.

* Reading and Math Resource Teachers: Ms. Denver will be working with students in 4th -8th grades for Math as well as the 2nd grade students on the Wilson Reading Program. Mrs. Carroll will continue to work with the 3rd to 8th grade students for Reading.

*Terra Nova Test Results: Students at St. Juliana performed above the national average in all content areas. Areas of most improvement were 3rd grade reading scores and 5th and 7th grade math scores. The Office of Catholic Schools has a system wide goal of all students in grade 3 reaching 90% in reading and all students in grade 7 reaching 90% in math.

*Internet Safety Training: Computer curriculum for all grade levels will include units focusing on internet safety. Various internet safety sites will be used to compliment the unit.



Catholic Identity

*Wednesday Masses will continue this year. The choir, hand bell groups and various student musicians will assist with the music again this year.

*8th Grade Leadership Day took place this year at Immaculate Conception on September 2nd. Eight grade students from various schools in the area participated.

*Friday Morning prayer will be read over P.A system this year. Reading will introduce the readings for the upcoming Sunday.



Parent Communication

*Coffee and Conversation Discussions will continue this school year. They will be planned for every other month. Mrs. Barton would like to invite teachers to attend -- depending on the topic for the meeting.

*Hearing and Vision Testing: Team will be at school the Week of September 12th. Information will be sent home with students.

*Safe Environment Training: At present St. Juliana’s has about 300 trained parent volunteers. All new volunteers are required to complete Virtus training which will be held this year on September 22nd. Information will be sent home.

*Strengthening Catholic Schools Meeting: September 24th at Nazareth Academy.

*Technology Update: (See Technology Report below)

*Parent Survey: Response to the parent survey from last June is posted on Mrs. Barton’s blog. She plans to address some of the areas in her back to school welcome at meeting planned for September 7, 2011



Students

*Fall Sports: 80% of 5th-8th grade students are participating in Football, Girls Basketball or Cheerleading.

*Grade Port: Teachers have received usernames and pass codes. Parents will receive them shortly. Update to follow.

*Enrollment for the current school year is 538.

*Anti-Bullying Book: The 7th and 8th grades are reading the book Crash by Jerry Spinelli in order to open the conversation of bullying issues.



6. Fr. Steve’s Report

*Review of completed summer school improvement projects.

*Review of End of Year Income and Expense Report for July 2010 to June 2011.



7. Review of Welcome Reception

*Welcome Reception for new parents took place in the school library on August 18, 2011. Thanks to Una for organizing this well received event.



8. Committee Reports

a. Finance

*Committee Members: John, Mark, Mike and Tim.

*No Report-will review projects and fiscal report for year ending 6/30/2011.

b. Fundraising

*Committee Members: Chris, John R., Ken, Mary and Jeff

* No Report

c. Technology

*Committee Members: Don, Ken, Mark, Nancy and Todd

*Worked this summer with United Visual/ Kevin Cavaungh to purchase and plan installation of new technology purchases from Fund-A-Cause. They were able to order 5 SMART Boards and 6 document cameras. A SMART board will be put in one 3rd.-7th grade classrooms. Teacher training is being made available. Looking toward late October for all equipment to be delivered and installed.

d. Marketing

*Committee Members: Sue, Una, Mary, Jaime and Denise

*No Report-will work on calendar to prepare for upcoming events.

e. Operations

*Committee Members: Chris, Don, Mike and John R.

*Sent out survey to Parish Council to get approval/feedback regarding Parish Tradesman Registry.



f. Bylaws/Legislative

*Committee Members: Mark, Mary, Jaime and Tim
