St Joseph Table - March 21 PDF Print E-mail

According to legend, the St. Joseph Table originated in Sicily several centuries ago, during a period of severe drought and famine. The people were starving and all they could grow were fava beans. In desperation, they prayed to St. Joseph, the protector of the Holy Family. He answered their prayers by sending good rains and an abundant harvest to end the famine.

To thank and honor St. Joseph, the people built altars consisting of grains, fruits, vegetables, seafood and wine. The food was served to the poorest of the poor and was shared in prayer and festivity. As the Italian people migrated to the New World, they brought with them this unique and beautiful tradition that is carried on in homes and churches throughout the United States today.

Our St. Joseph Table is held annually on the Sunday nearest the feast day, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the school hall; this year's event is scheduled for March 21, 2010. There is no charge for this delicious dinner, but cash donations are encouraged. Please be generous as all donations aid the poor and needy.

Once again we are asking for your assistance in making our St. Joseph Table a success. Donations of any of the following items would be gratefully accepted and may be left in the boxes marked "St. Joseph Table" in the back of church, or dropped off at the Simonetti residence at 7106 Osceola Avenue:

  • Paper goods: cups, plates (heavy duty), napkins, utensils, plastic wrap, white plastic tablecloths
  • Dried goods: uncooked pasta: spaghetti or linguini
  • Cans/jars/bottles: crushed tomatoes, olive oil, olives, Italian dressing
  • Beverages: juices (any), coffee (regular & decaf), wine, bottled water

We also welcome homemade breads and desserts, pre-washed salads and fruits, which should be delivered to the school hall (lower level) Saturday, March 20 from 1:00-5:00 PM, or the morning of Sunday, March 21.
