Letters From A Pastor to His People November 17, 2019
At first glance, you might look at these readings and not have a warm, fuzzy feeling. They might not appear very consoling to you. Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven...We hear that some are conducting themselves among you in a disorderly way...There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place...You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death...You will be hated by all because of my name...
The First Reading is from the Prophet Malachi. Malachi is writing in the fifth century before Christ to a community with very lax morals. In this reading, Malachi speaks in frightening terms of the imminent Day of the Lord. There was much corruption and unfaithfulness to God. The message here is that all humanity must eventually take sides to choose good or evil because a Day is coming when there will be a reckoning and all must be judged.
The average American is physically, biologically, psychologically and neurologically unable to do anything worthwhile before he has a cup of coffee. And that goes for prayer too. Even sisters in convents whose rules were written before electric percolators were developed would do well to update their procedures. Let them have coffee before meditation.

Interest in Joining a Small Faith Group?
Im looking to start small mens and womens faith groups here at Saint Juliana. The general concept is that these groups would meet regularly (frequency determined by the members) and keep the conversation intentional and spiritual in nature. The group might have a particular topic for a meeting (how to find time to pray, how to juggle a crazy schedule while maintaining your core values, etc.) the members might share their struggles or blessings at work, in their marriage, with their faith a particular book or article might be read and discussed.
There really is no predetermined structure. Its whatever the members of the group find lifegiving and helpful. Its these kinds of groups that can help invigorate and deepen your faith, not to mention build lifelong, Christian relationships. Please pray about being part of a group and feel free to let me know if you have any questions or idea!
If you are interested in being part of a group of 46 individuals, or alpha please send me an email. I will then follow up with you.
The Pastoral Council is exploring Alpha. Alpha isan 11week course that creates a space where people are excited to bring their friends for a conversation about faith, life and God. The sessions of Alpha involve a meal, a short video, and discussion.
If Alpha is something you might be interested in participating in please let me know. In addition to the small faith groups I am trying to form, we might also establish a small group or two that does Alpha, if we have enough interest.
If youre curious to learn more about Alpha, please visit www.alpha.org.
On Sunday, September 22, 1946, over 100,000 Chicagoans filled Soldier Field. They were not present to watch a Bears game. No screaming or consumption of alcohol occurred. The large crowd was praying a holy hour that is, sitting all together in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. The occasion was the celebration of the canonization of Saint Mother Cabrini by Pope Pius XII.
My joy, my pleasure, my delight is to be with you. (Prov 831)Come join us Mondays for Holy Hour from 630pm730pm in the Chapel to pray the rosary and other litanies. Each moment you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament brings joy, pleasure, and delight to his Sacred Heart!
