Letters From A Pastor to His People January 13, 2018
And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove (Lk 3:22).What is the significance of the dove?
We know now that the dove is one of the forms or images of the Holy Spirit. But for the crowd witnessing Jesus baptism in the Jordan, they would not have picked up on this. They simply would have seen a bird flying in the sky that happened to hover above this young adult. The Old Testament made no mention of God being a bird. But there are, however, some Old Testament references to the dove, and Id like to use these to unpack the doves significance in the Baptism of our Lord.
Noah releases a dove during the flood to determine if dry land has appeared; if the flood waters have begun to recede (cf. Gen 8:8).It first returns with an olive branch and then, at last, it never returns, indicating to Noah that the land is once again habitable, as the dove is able to settle on it.
Saint Juliana Parish hosts a monthly gathering for teens and invites all current high school students to attend and join our Teen Ministry.
Our next session is January 13th when we meet in church for 5pm Mass then head over to the Ahearn Activity Center for prayerful conversation, food (usually pizza or something equally good) and open gym immediately afterwards.
Bring your friends and spread the word! Students from all high schools are welcome and theres no cost. This is a great chance to reconnect with grammar school friends you havent seen in a while, and make new friends!
Every Friday morning when Saint Juliana School is in session we host a casual gathering for tots (age 03) and their caregivers in the Ahearn Activity Center from8:15 to 10am.
Tots & Company is free and open to everyone, parishioner or nonparishioner. All you need to do is show up! Its a great time to connect with other moms, dads, grandparents and caregivers to enjoy coffee, donuts and adult conversation while the little ones can have a playgroup of their own as they run (or crawl) around our spacious gym. We also have juice boxes and snacks for the kids.
