Letters from a Pastor to His People- June 9, 2019
In the Nicene Creed at Mass, we say the following:
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
The giver of life. What a great sobriquet of the Holy Spirit!
We celebrate the Feast of Pentecost this weekend, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples gathered in the upper room (cf. Acts 2: 1-11). This scene is connected to Moses on Mount Sinai. Moses, in his own "upper room", is surrounded by God. We read: "Mount Sinai was all wrapped in smoke, for the LORD came down upon it in fire" (Exodus 19:18).
Unfortunately while Moses is up on the mountain communing with God, the Israelites at the base of the mountain build and worship the golden calf. When Moses comes down the mountain, he not only smashes the tablets with the Ten Commandments, he orders the Levites (the priests) to kill the apostates! "The Levites carried out the command of Moses, and that day there fell about three thousand of the people" (Exodus 32:28).
When Peter and the Apostles come down from their "mountain" (i.e., the upper room), having received God like Moses did, they too encounter a group of people. Do they kill like Moses? No! They preach and, we read, "Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day" (Acts 2:41).
The Holy Spirit gives life. We all have the Holy Spirit from our baptism. May we bring life to those we encounter.
We will be doing a special Pentecost Vigil following the Saturday 5pm Mass this weekend, June 8th. There will be an hour of Eucharistic Adoration in the Church, which will include praying Evening Prayer, the Litany of the Holy Spirit, and more. We also will have some praise and worship music during the hour. We hope you will consider joining us to celebrate the "birthday of the Church" and the coming of the Holy Spirit!
This weekend is the Collection for Retired Priests. Special envelopes are in the back of the church.
Men's Club has its meeting this Monday, June 10th. Be sure to sign up for the Men's Club golf outing on Saturday, August 24th!
Deacon Hank Lyon will give the Tuesday Theology Talk this Tuesday, June 11th on the Sacrament of Confession, which will include its theology, its history, and a perspective of the sacrament from St. Faustina. This will be the last Tuesday Theology Talk until the fall.
Now that school has ended, we are starting a few summer capital projects. First is the completion of the courtyard. If you recall, last fall we installed a new elevator in the school, as well as a playground in half of the courtyard. Now we will be working on the other half of the courtyard, creating a social space for gatherings, which will include landscaping. Second is the creation of the school STEAM lab. The lab will be going in our school's current library space, and will be a huge additional to our curriculum (see the note inside from our principal, Mrs. Marshall). These projects are possible, in large part, because of the funds we raised at last year's Emerald City Gala. So, thank you to all those who participated in the Gala and contributed. We will be doing the Gala again this year (September 14th), and I hope you will consider attending and contributing again to help our parish.
Yours in Christ,
